US Expands Imports of Vietnamese Specialty Coffee

The global coffee market is undergoing a significant transformation, with Vietnamese specialty coffee—particularly Robusta—gaining strong attention from American roasters and importers. With rising demand and shifting consumption habits in the United States, Vietnamese specialty coffee now stands at the edge of expanding its presence in one of the world’s largest coffee-consuming markets.

Rising Demand, Limited Supply

According to the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (Vicofa), during a recent visit and meeting with the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCA), many US importers and roasters expressed a clear interest in importing more specialty coffee from Vietnam. Among the most sought-after is Vietnam’s specialty Robusta, as American consumers are increasingly drawn to its bold, distinctive flavor compared to traditional Arabica.

Data from the past two years show a clear shift in US consumption patterns, with specialty Robusta gaining traction alongside Arabica. Younger generations in particular are looking for new, stronger, and more unique coffee experiences. This presents a major opportunity for Vietnamese Robusta to expand its market share and strengthen its global position.

However, despite being the world’s largest producer and exporter of Robusta coffee, Vietnam’s output of specialty-grade Robusta remains limited. This leaves a market gap that Vietnam must capitalize on quickly.

Speaking to Dan Tri, Mr. Thai Nhu Hiep, noted that Vietnam’s specialty Robusta accounts for less than 1% of the US market share—an extremely modest figure given the country’s production capacity. “Vietnam’s specialty coffee development remains minimal, and product marketing is still weak,” he said. “This means our specialty coffee has not yet reached global recognition. Another key issue is the lack of clear and internationally accepted specialty coffee standards.”

The Need for a Vietnamese Specialty Coffee Standard

The core issue behind Vietnam’s limited production of specialty Robusta lies in the absence of a dedicated scientific standard for this category. Currently, green coffee evaluation mainly relies on physical factors such as bean size, moisture, uniformity, color, and defect count. However, there is no established method connecting these physical properties to sensory quality—a key requirement for creating a recognized specialty coffee standard.

“As the world’s largest Robusta producer, Vietnam urgently needs to develop an official specialty Robusta standard,” said Mr. Huy. “Global roasters are showing strong demand for this category; we just need the standards to gain international recognition.”

Vicofa has also proposed that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development introduce a national and internationally aligned quality standard for Robusta and specialty Robusta, to ensure Vietnam does not miss out on expanding its exports to the US and other major markets.

Specialty Coffee Prices Expected to Stay High in the Next Season

Looking ahead to the 2025–2026 coffee season, experts remain optimistic about Vietnam’s export prospects. According to coffee market analyst Nguyễn Quang Bình, Vietnam’s coffee industry still holds strong potential for growth. Certified stock levels on both the London and New York exchanges are currently at record lows.

The International Coffee Organization (ICO) reported that certified Robusta inventories on the London exchange fell by 4.3% between August and September, ending September at 1.08 million bags. Meanwhile, certified Arabica inventories on the New York exchange fell 19.3% to 0.66 million 60-kg bags.

Vicofa attributed the decline to investor caution surrounding the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). Many exporters are hesitant to put coffee on the exchange, fearing that non-compliant batches will be disqualified from trading. As a result, reduced inventories have tightened supply and kept prices high.

Global coffee consumption for the 2025–2026 season is forecast to reach 169.4 million bags. With Arabica currently costing nearly twice as much as Robusta, roasters are increasingly turning to Robusta to stabilize costs while maintaining product quality. “The market needs Robusta,” said Mr. Bình. “When Arabica prices are too high, roasters naturally shift toward Robusta as a more affordable yet reliable option.”

A Golden Opportunity for Vietnamese Specialty Robusta

Experts agree that Vietnam’s Robusta is facing a once-in-a-generation opportunity. Following the United States’ decision to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian coffee and other imports, American roasters have begun shifting supply chains. With Vietnam’s tariff rate at just 20% and its vast production capacity, it has quickly become the preferred source for many roasters.

According to Vicofa, Vietnam’s coffee exports to the US rose by 5.8% compared to the previous season—a strong indicator of growing momentum, particularly in the specialty segment.

To sustain this growth, Vietnam must continue improving quality, traceability, and international marketing. Deep-processing investments and adherence to Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) standards will be key to enhancing the global reputation and value of Vietnamese specialty coffee.

Conclusion

Vietnamese specialty coffee—especially Robusta—is entering a period of unprecedented potential. The surge in global demand, led by American roasters, offers significant growth opportunities, provided Vietnam strengthens its quality control and international branding. By establishing a robust national specialty coffee standard and promoting its unique origins and flavor profiles, Vietnam can elevate its position among the world’s top specialty coffee exporters.
