Custom coffee packaging comes in five families: printed sachets and sticks, glass jars, tins, valve bags for roasted coffee and bulk packs for factories and roasters. Each one sets a different minimum order, barrier level, freight cost per kilogram and lead time, so the format decision belongs at the start of a private label project, not the end.
This explainer compares the options we offer at Helena Coffee Vietnam for instant, 3-in-1, roasted and green coffee: what each is made of, where it works, and how it loads into a container.

Which Custom Coffee Packaging Format Fits Your Product?
Match the format to the product and the channel. Sticks and sachets suit instant and 3-in-1 for mass retail and offices; jars and tins suit premium instant and gifting; valve bags are for roasted beans and ground coffee; bulk packs are for buyers who pack locally or process further.
| Format | Typical use | Sizes we offer | Barrier | What sets the MOQ |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sachets and sticks | Instant, 2-in-1, 3-in-1, 4-in-1 | 2 g freeze-dried sticks, 16 g 3-in-1 sticks, custom | Foil or metallized laminate | Printed film run per design, typically 250,000–420,000 sachets |
| Glass jars | Premium instant | 50 g, 80 g, 100 g, 150 g, 200 g | Glass plus induction seal | Jar and label quantities |
| Tins | Gifting, premium instant | Custom | Metal | Tin quantity |
| Valve bags | Roasted whole bean or ground | Custom | Laminate with one-way valve | 500 kg for private label roasted |
| Bulk | Instant for local packing; green for roasters | 25 kg bags or cartons; 60 kg bags; 1,000 kg jumbo bags | Kraft with PE liner; jute or PP, hermetic liner on request | 1 MT |
Sachets and Sticks: Laminates and Printing Cylinders
A stick is a multilayer laminate: a printable outer layer (usually PET), a barrier layer and a heat-sealable inner layer (PE). The barrier is the main choice. Aluminum foil gives the strongest protection against moisture and oxygen; metallized film costs less and is adequate for many markets. Instant coffee absorbs moisture quickly, so we recommend foil or metallized structures for 24-month shelf life.
Printing is where the cost logic sits. Gravure film uses one engraved cylinder per color, paid once per design and reused on repeat orders. Fewer colors mean fewer cylinders, a later text change means re-engraving only that cylinder, and SKUs that share a background can sometimes share cylinders. Film is printed in long runs, so each design carries a minimum in pieces rather than kilograms; our explainer on coffee minimum order quantity sets out the numbers.
Glass Jars: Closures, Induction Seals and Labels
Jars are the format for premium spray-dried, agglomerated and freeze-dried coffee such as our robusta freeze dried instant coffee. We offer 50 g, 80 g, 100 g, 150 g and 200 g jars with metal or plastic screw caps. An induction seal, a foil liner bonded to the jar rim after filling, gives tamper evidence and a moisture barrier until the consumer opens it; the cap alone does not.
Labels are either pressure-sensitive (paper or film applied to the jar) or shrink sleeves covering the whole body. Label runs are far smaller than film runs, so jars are the practical route to a small premium launch. The trade-offs are weight and breakage: glass adds to freight and needs sturdy cartons.
Tins and Valve Bags
Tins carry a premium look and reuse value, and they protect well. They cost more than jars and need a liner or inner bag, so most brands reserve them for gifting lines.
Valve bags are the standard for roasted coffee. Freshly roasted beans release carbon dioxide for days after roasting, so a sealed bag without a vent swells and can burst. A one-way degassing valve lets the gas out while keeping oxygen and moisture out.
Valve makers such as Plitek note that the oxygen level inside the bag depends on the valve, the film and whether the bag is nitrogen-flushed, so ask what your packing run includes. Sealed whole beans keep for about 12 months and ground coffee about 6, so ground products need the better barrier.

Bulk Packaging for Instant and Green Coffee
Bulk packs are for buyers who fill their own retail packs or process further. For instant coffee we use 25 kg kraft bags or cartons with a PE liner, the standard pack for spray dried instant robusta grade 1 and the rest of our instant coffee range. Instant is light, so a 20 ft container takes about 6 MT and a 40 ft about 12 MT.
Green coffee ships in 60 kg jute or PP bags, 320 bags or 19.2 MT to a 20 ft container lined with kraft paper and fitted with desiccants. GrainPro or other hermetic liners are available on request for extra moisture protection on long transits, and 1,000 kg jumbo bags suit roasters and soluble plants with bulk intake. Our green coffee storage guide covers conditions after arrival.

Barrier, Shelf Life and Lead Time
Three rules keep custom coffee packaging from failing in the market:
- Barrier matches the product. Instant coffee leaves the dryer at 5% moisture or less and keeps for 24 months only if the pack keeps moisture out. Foil laminates, induction-sealed jars and lined tins meet that; thin clear film and unsealed caps do not.
- Fill and seal are checked in line. Fill weight, seal integrity and lot and date coding should be verified during the run, with a certificate of analysis for each lot.
- Lead time is set by artwork, not coffee. Production runs about 20–30 days after artwork approval; first orders needing new cylinders take longer than repeats, and bulk instant without printed packs runs around 15–20 working days. Our pillar on working with a private label coffee manufacturer in Vietnam covers proofs and approvals.
| Container load (20 ft) | Approximate weight | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Green coffee, 60 kg bags | 19.2 MT | Limited by weight |
| Bulk instant, 25 kg packs | about 6 MT | Limited by volume |
| 15 g sachets in display cartons | about 4.5–5.5 MT | Cartons trap air |
| Glass jars | varies by jar size | Glass weight and carton size |
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cheapest custom coffee packaging to start with?
For instant coffee, bulk 25 kg packs cost least per kilogram and avoid printed-film minimums, which suits buyers who pack locally. For a retail launch, jars with labels usually have the lowest entry quantity. Sticks are cheapest per unit at volume but carry film minimums of typically 250,000–420,000 sachets per design.
How long does instant coffee last in sachets or jars?
Sealed instant coffee has a shelf life of 24 months in foil or metallized sticks, induction-sealed jars or lined bulk packs. The limit is moisture: instant coffee is hygroscopic and cakes once it absorbs water. Clear film without a barrier layer or a jar without an induction seal shortens that life, especially in humid markets.
Why do printing cylinders raise the cost of a first order?
Gravure printing needs one engraved cylinder per color, and engraving is a one-off cost paid before the first run. On repeat orders the cylinders already exist, so the per-unit price falls. Fewer colors and shared backgrounds across SKUs reduce the number of cylinders you pay for.
Can roasted coffee be packed without a valve?
Only if it is fully degassed before packing, which ties up stock and costs freshness. For export we recommend valve bags for whole bean and ground coffee so that carbon dioxide escapes without letting oxygen in. Ground coffee stales faster, so it benefits most from a good barrier.
