Agglomerated Instant Coffee: What It Is and When to Use It

Vietnamese Coffee Exporter

Agglomerated instant coffee is spray dried coffee powder that has been moistened with steam so the fine particles fuse into larger granules, then dried again and sieved. In a jar it looks closer to freeze dried crystals, it pours with less dust and it wets faster in the cup, yet it costs far less to make than freeze drying because the extract was already dried in a spray tower.

Below: how the process works, how granules differ from powder and crystals, where the cost sits, which applications suit it, and how our AI01 granules are packed and ordered.

What Is Agglomerated Instant Coffee?

It is a second processing step, not a different coffee. The extract is spray dried into fine powder first; agglomeration then rebuilds that powder into porous clusters several times larger. The flavor follows the base powder, so a granule made from commercial robusta tastes like commercial robusta. What changes is the physical form: particle size, density, flow and appearance.

GEA, which builds instant coffee plants, describes rewet agglomeration as the route to granulated, dust-free instant coffee. The product is often sold as “granulated” instant coffee, which confuses buyers, because freeze dried coffee is granular too. Ask which process made the granule; price and aroma differ.

How Steam Agglomeration Works

  1. Spray drying. Concentrated extract is atomized into hot air; the powder that collects is fine, light and prone to dusting.
  2. Rewetting. Sized powder falls through low-velocity steam, or a fine mist of extract, which softens only the particle surfaces so they stick together in loose clusters.
  3. Re-drying. Warm air removes the added moisture, hardening a thin crust that holds each granule together.
  4. Sieving. Granules are screened to size; fines go back to the start.

A published US patent gives a sense of the numbers: powder of roughly 25–75 microns is fused into agglomerates of about 800–1,300 microns with a bulk density near 0.20–0.28 g/cc, rapidly soluble, with a darker fused exterior (US Patent 4,594,256). Every plant runs its own settings; treat those figures as orientation.

Agglomeration adds one short wet-and-dry step to a continuous spray dried line, while freeze drying holds product under vacuum for hours. Granules land a notch above powder and well below crystals, the gap many mainstream jar brands want to fill.

Dissolution and Bulk Density: What Changes on Your Line

Dissolution. Powder and granules can carry the same lab solubility spec, ≥98% on our sheets, and still behave differently in a cup. Fine powder dumped onto hot water tends to float and clump before it dissolves; porous granules wet through their open structure, sink and disperse with little stirring.

Bulk density. Density decides how big a jar a given net weight needs, how many grams a teaspoon holds, and how many tonnes fit in a container. Our SDC and SD01 sheets list 0.2–0.4 g/ml for powder; granules usually sit in the same range or slightly lower, so a 100 g jar of granules looks fuller. For AI01, granule size and bulk density are available on request; test jar fill and spoon dose with a sample before ordering glass.

When to Use Agglomerated Instant Coffee, and When Not To

Use it for:

  • Private label jars where a granule look matters but freeze dried pricing does not fit.
  • Refill pouches and tins where consumers spoon coffee into the cup.
  • Foodservice, office and hotel dispensers, where free flow and low dust matter.
  • Strong black, milk and iced coffee in robusta-leaning markets.

Skip it when:

  • The coffee disappears into a 3-in-1 mix or vending powder: powder is cheaper, and granules mixed with fine sugar and creamer can separate inside the stick.
  • The brand promise is aroma on opening: freeze drying keeps more of it, and agglomeration cannot add aroma the base powder lost.
  • The coffee is dissolved in a factory, as in dairy drinks or bakery: form is irrelevant there, so buy powder.

Packaging and Ordering AI01

Our granule is AI01: 100% Vietnamese robusta, ≤4% moisture, ≥98% solubility, 3.0–4.0% caffeine, chocolate aroma, assertive bitterness, 24-month shelf life. Details are on our agglomerated instant coffee supplier page and in the agglomerated instant category.

  • Bulk: 25 kg kraft bags with PE liner or cartons; 10 kg and 20 kg packs also available. Granules fill a container by volume before weight: about 6 MT per 20 ft and 12 MT per 40 ft.
  • OEM: jars, sachets and tins with your artwork, shipping about 20–30 days after artwork approval.
  • MOQ and lead time: from 1 MT; bulk in about 15–20 working days.
  • Terms: FOB Ho Chi Minh City (Cat Lai port), CFR/CIF on request; T/T deposit with the balance before B/L release, or L/C at sight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is agglomerated instant coffee the same as freeze dried?

No. Both are granular, but agglomerated coffee is spray dried powder rewetted and fused into clusters, while freeze dried coffee is frozen extract dried under vacuum. Freeze drying keeps more aroma and costs significantly more; agglomeration gives the granule look at a price close to spray dried.

Does agglomeration change the taste?

Not materially. The granule carries the flavor of the powder it was made from, with a brief second heat step. Choose the base grade for taste and the form for appearance and handling.

Why do granules dissolve better than powder if both are 98% soluble?

The lab test measures how much dissolves eventually; the cup shows how fast it wets. Open, porous granules let water in from all sides and sink, while fine powder can float and clump on the surface, so granules get there with less stirring.

Can AI01 be packed under my brand?

Yes. We fill jars, sachets and tins with your artwork, or ship 25 kg bulk for your own line. Orders start from 1 MT; private-label runs ship about 20–30 days after artwork approval, longer when new printing cylinders are needed.

Bottom Line

Agglomerated instant coffee is the practical middle: granule appearance and clean handling at a cost close to spray dried powder. Pick it for jars, refills and dispensers; powder when the coffee disappears into a mix; freeze dried when aroma sells.
