Coffee export remains one of Vietnam’s most dynamic and resilient agricultural sectors in the first half of 2025. With total export revenue exceeding USD 5.4 billion, up 69.36% year-on-year, the country not only reaffirms its position as the world’s leading Robusta exporter but also showcases a strategic transformation in expanding market presence and increasing product value.
Coffee Export Hits USD 5.4 Billion in the First Half of 2025
In June 2025 alone, coffee export volume reached 117,983 tons, worth USD 677.92 million, down about 21% compared to May 2025. However, the overall trend for the first half of the year paints a promising picture for Vietnam’s coffee export industry.
Key Export Markets and Emerging Opportunities
Germany – Vietnam’s Largest Coffee Importer
Germany remains Vietnam’s top coffee export destination, accounting for over 15% of both total volume and value. In the first half of 2025, Vietnam exported 149,543 tons of coffee to Germany, valued at USD 824.85 million, with an average price of USD 5,516 per ton. The country saw impressive year-on-year growth: 33.2% in volume, 115% in value, and 61.5% in average price, indicating robust demand for high-quality Vietnamese coffee.
Spain – A Rising Star
Spain has emerged as a strategic growth market. Although export volume increased by just 6%, the value jumped by 67%, reaching USD 403.85 million for 69,539 tons of coffee at an average price of USD 5,808 per ton. This reflects growing demand for premium coffee products.
In June alone, coffee exports to Spain surged by 176%, showcasing a strong recovery and increasing market potential. Spain is no longer just a traditional buyer—it is quickly becoming a key pillar of Vietnam’s coffee export strategy.
Algeria – The Breakout Market
Algeria has seen explosive growth and is considered the most impressive emerging market for Vietnamese coffee in early 2025. The North African country imported 56,800 tons of coffee, generating USD 294 million in revenue—a 254% increase in value. This remarkable growth demonstrates the success of Vietnam’s strategy to penetrate new markets, especially in Muslim-majority countries with stable consumption patterns.
Italy, USA, Japan – Traditional Markets Remain Strong
Italy remains Vietnam’s second-largest market, importing 76,993 tons of coffee worth USD 409.22 million. Despite an 11% decline in volume, export value still rose 48% thanks to price increases. Other traditional markets such as the U.S., Japan, the Netherlands, and Belgium continue to show steady demand, maintaining their role as strongholds in Vietnam’s export network.
Leveraging FTAs and the Shift to High-Value Coffee Products
One key driver behind the strong performance of Vietnam’s coffee export industry is the effective utilization of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) such as EVFTA, UKVFTA, and CPTPP. Vietnamese coffee enterprises have invested heavily in processing technologies, traceability systems, and product quality improvements to meet the growing demands of international markets.
Strong Push for Processed Coffee and Arabica
2025 has seen a significant increase in the share of processed coffee and Arabica in total exports. This reflects Vietnam’s efforts to move up the value chain and cater to high-end markets like the EU, USA, and Japan, where there is increasing demand for specialty coffee, instant coffee, and sustainably sourced products.
This transition from raw coffee to high-value products creates new opportunities for sustainable growth and higher profit margins.
Green Consumption Trends – A Challenge and an Opportunity
According to the Vietnam Trade Office in Belgium and the EU, Vietnamese coffee exports to the EU reached EUR 983.2 million in the first four months of 2025, up 30% year-on-year. However, most of this is still raw coffee, with limited value-added processing.
Meanwhile, the EU market is rapidly shifting toward green and sustainable consumption, applying strict standards related to labor, environment, and transparency. Consumers now care not only about price and quality but also about how products are made.
This trend presents both a challenge and an opportunity. Vietnamese companies must quickly adapt by investing in sustainable practices, certification, and transparent supply chains to maintain access to high-value markets.
Outlook for the Second Half of 2025: Opportunities for Further Growth
With global coffee prices expected to remain high and production declining in several major exporting countries, Vietnam has a golden opportunity to set new records in both coffee export volume and value.
To sustain this momentum, the coffee sector must:
Expand deep-processing capabilities
Develop specialty and instant coffee products
Standardize quality and traceability
Capitalize on FTA tax advantages
Explore untapped markets such as the Middle East, North Africa, and North America
Conclusion
Coffee export continues to be a major contributor to Vietnam’s agricultural economy. The impressive results of the first half of 2025 serve as a solid foundation for a breakthrough in the months to come.
By focusing on quality, processing technology, brand building, and market diversification, Vietnam is well-positioned to elevate its role on the global coffee map. The rising demand from both traditional and emerging markets, combined with supportive trade policies and internal innovation, promises a bright future for Vietnamese coffee on the world stage.
