Rainforest Alliance: In a world where consumers care more than ever about sustainability and transparency, certifications like Rainforest Alliance (RFA) are making a big difference. With its recognizable green frog seal, RFA has become a trusted symbol for responsibly sourced coffee, tea, cocoa, and other agricultural products.

So what exactly does this certification mean? And why should it matter to producers, roasters, and consumers alike?

What is the Rainforest Alliance?

Rainforest Alliance is a non-profit organization based in the United States that works to drive sustainable farming, protect biodiversity, and support better livelihoods for farmers and forest communities. It does this primarily through a globally recognized certification program and its Sustainable Agriculture Standard.

This certification helps ensure that farms and businesses meet high environmental, social, and economic standards—creating a win-win for the planet and the people who grow the food we consume every day.

What does the RFA certification mean?

Rainforest Alliance Certification isn’t just a label—it’s a commitment. When you see a product with the frog seal, you know that:

It was grown using sustainable farming methods
Natural resources were preserved and forests protected
Workers were treated fairly and work in safe, equitable conditions
Farmers have access to global markets and often receive higher prices for their certified crops

In short, RFA certification means the product was produced in a way that respects both people and the planet.

What are the requirements for certification?

To become certified, farms and companies must follow five key principles and meet over 100 specific criteria. These include:

  1. Strong management and planning systems

  2. Biodiversity conservation

  3. Protection of natural resources like water and soil

  4. Improving livelihoods and well-being of workers

  5. Sustainable livestock practices (where applicable)

Certified producers also undergo regular third-party audits to ensure they meet the standards and continue improving over time.

Main Certification Programs by Rainforest Alliance

Sustainable Agriculture Certification

Focused on helping farmers adopt eco-friendly methods and improve productivity. This includes reducing agrochemicals, conserving biodiversity, and protecting worker rights.

Sustainable Forestry Certification (FSC)

In partnership with the Forest Stewardship Council, RFA works with businesses that produce wood, paper, and other forest-based products to manage forests responsibly and ethically.

Sustainable Tourism Certification

This program helps hotels, tour operators, and travel businesses minimize their environmental impact and support local communities. Certified companies can use the RFA frog seal, recognized by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).
