Amid rising inflation, the coffee industry faces demand problems along with improving supply and a host of other factors.
Mr. Bose Mandanna, an Arabica grower in Suntikoppa village, Kodagu district, Karnataka state, India, said: “The world Arabica market is declining day by day. From 242 cents/pound, the price of arabica fell to 169 cents/pound on the day. But for the rupee, the drop could be even bigger.
“In addition, concerns surrounding a recession in Europe and the uncertainty of the conflict situation between Russia and Ukraine are also weighing on prices.”
Mr. Jeffry Rebello, President of the United Horticultural Association of South India (UPASI), said the harvest outlook in Brazil is positive. However, the global macroeconomic situation is not favorable in all aspects. row.
Mr. Rebello assessed that higher interest rates, rising inflation and global tightening are putting pressure on the market. According to Mr. N Ramanathan, President of Karnataka Cultivars Association (KPA), the drop in prices was due to speculation from traders who observed a drop in prices around the time of Diwali and the whole new year.
Early harvest of coffee beans for crop year 2022-2023 (October) has begun in some areas of Kodagu and Chikkamagalur. However, the prolonged rainy season leads to a lack of sunshine. Therefore, coffee berries are difficult to ripen evenly, prolonging the harvest time.
