Coffee news: Nespresso launches compostable coffee capsules at home

The Swiss coffee pods giant has partnered with Huhtamäki to develop paper-based capsules, which will launch in France and Switzerland early next year. Nespresso has partnered with sustainable packaging company Huhtamäki to create compostable paper coffee capsules at home.

The Swiss coffee pod company said the capsule took three years to develop and respond to growing consumer demand for compostable packaging. The product will be tested in France and Switzerland in the spring of 2023, before launching in a number of other European countries within a year.

Nespresso says its new paper-based coffee capsule advertisement is made from wood fibers that are reasonably sourced from European forests. The capsules have been independently certified by the German technical certification company TÜV as home compostable and compostable in food waste collection programs.

The capsules are designed by Finnish packaging manufacturer  Huhtamäki, which established an exclusive partnership with Nespresso in 2021. The Espoo-based company says the launch marks a step in significant growth in innovation for the circular economy and a “leap for consumers around the world”.

Nespresso announced its certification as B Corp in April 2022, after achieving a score of 84 in its global business spanning 38 markets.   In September 2022, Swiss coffee giant Nestlé cited Nespresso capsule sales as a key growth driver for its UK business in 2021.
