Vietnam Coffee Exports Surge in Early 2026

Coffee exports from Vietnam have started 2026 on a strong note, generating more than US$1 billion in revenue in just one month. According to preliminary data from Vietnam Customs, the country’s coffee industry continues to benefit from strong global demand, particularly from European markets and Russia.

The impressive growth in coffee exports highlights Vietnam’s position as one of the world’s leading coffee suppliers. While the global coffee market still faces uncertainties related to climate conditions, logistics disruptions, and geopolitical tensions, demand for Vietnamese coffee remains resilient.

However, as global supply is expected to increase in the coming seasons, the coffee market may gradually move toward a new balance between supply and demand. This shift could influence future coffee export trends and pricing dynamics.

Vietnam Coffee Exports Exceed US$1 Billion in January 2026

According to preliminary statistics, Vietnam exported more than 224,000 tons of coffee in January 2026, generating approximately US$1.08 billion in revenue. The average export price reached US$4,820 per ton, reflecting relatively high global coffee prices at the start of the year.

Compared with December 2025, Vietnam’s coffee exports recorded strong growth:

  • 22.62% increase in export volume

  • 14.06% increase in export value

Year-on-year growth was even more significant:

  • 67.42% increase in volume

  • 48.33% increase in export value

These figures confirm that coffee exports remain one of Vietnam’s most important agricultural export sectors, contributing significantly to the country’s trade balance and rural economy.

Vietnam’s Key Coffee-Producing Regions

Vietnam currently has approximately 710,000 hectares of coffee plantations, primarily concentrated in the Central Highlands region.

The three largest coffee-producing provinces are:

  • Dak Lak

  • Lam Dong

  • Gia Lai

Together, these provinces account for more than 92.4% of Vietnam’s total coffee-growing area and produce roughly 95% of the country’s coffee output.

Thanks to favorable climate conditions, fertile basalt soil, and decades of farming experience, the Central Highlands has become the backbone of Vietnam’s coffee export industry, supplying high-quality robusta beans to global markets.

Europe Remains the Largest Market for Vietnam Coffee Exports

The European Union (EU) continues to be the largest destination for Vietnam’s coffee exports.

As of January 2026, Germany remains Vietnam’s largest coffee export market, with export revenue reaching US$175.46 million, accounting for 16.23% of Vietnam’s total coffee export value.

Compared with the same period last year, coffee exports to Germany increased by 44.81%, demonstrating stable demand from European buyers.

Other major European markets such as Spain and Italy also recorded strong import figures, each exceeding US$80 million in coffee purchases.

Spain, in particular, showed remarkable growth, with export value increasing 53.28% compared with December 2025.

Additional European markets also experienced significant growth in coffee imports from Vietnam, including:

  • Belgium – up 63.35%

  • United Kingdom – up 59.29%

  • France – up 84.34%

These figures indicate that Europe continues to be a critical market supporting the growth of Vietnam’s coffee exports.

Coffee Exports to Russia Show Strong Growth

In addition to Europe, coffee exports to Russia have also increased significantly.

In January 2026, Vietnam exported more than US$65.52 million worth of coffee to Russia, accounting for approximately 6.06% of the country’s total coffee export value.

Compared with December 2025, exports to Russia rose 19.68%, while year-on-year growth reached an impressive 68.06%.

This strong increase suggests that Russia is becoming an increasingly important market for Vietnamese coffee exports, particularly as exporters diversify their global customer base.

Some Markets Recorded Short-Term Declines

Despite strong performance in Europe and Russia, several markets recorded temporary declines in coffee imports compared with the previous month.

Coffee export values decreased in:

  • Southeast Asia – down 4.9%

  • United States – down 17.97%

  • China – down 12.92%

  • Thailand – down 34%

However, when compared with the same period in 2025, exports to these markets still showed strong growth:

  • Southeast Asia increased 41.72%

  • United States increased 14.78%

  • China surged 261.88%

  • Thailand increased 130.7%

These figures indicate that the short-term decline is likely temporary, while long-term demand for Vietnamese coffee exports remains strong.

Vietnam Coffee Production Outlook

According to the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association, coffee production for the 2025–2026 crop season is expected to increase by around 10% compared with the previous season.

Higher production could further strengthen Vietnam’s position as the world’s largest robusta coffee exporter, while also supporting the continued growth of the country’s coffee export sector.

However, rising global production may also affect future market prices, which exporters must monitor carefully.

Global Coffee Market Moving Toward Supply Balance

Globally, several organizations expect the coffee market to gradually move from a supply deficit toward a more balanced supply-demand situation.

The World Bank forecasts that global coffee production will increase from 175.4 million bags in the 2024–2025 season to approximately 179 million bags in the 2025–2026 season.

If global supply continues to rise faster than demand, the market could eventually face oversupply pressure, which may push coffee prices lower particularly for arabica coffee.

Geopolitical Tensions May Impact Coffee Trade

Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East could also influence global coffee export logistics.

Europe is currently the largest consumer of Vietnamese coffee. If shipping routes in the Middle East become disrupted, trade flows between Asia and Europe could face delays or higher transportation costs.

In response, European roasters may increase coffee purchases and inventory levels to secure supply.

This behavior could temporarily support higher demand for Vietnamese coffee exports, especially robusta beans used widely in espresso blends and instant coffee production.

Outlook for Vietnam Coffee Exports

Overall, Vietnam’s coffee exports have begun 2026 with strong momentum, surpassing US$1 billion in revenue in January alone.

Strong demand from Europe and Russia, combined with recovering global consumption, continues to support the industry.

However, as global coffee supply gradually increases and markets stabilize, future coffee export growth may moderate. Prices may continue to rise but are unlikely to surge dramatically as they did in previous years.

For Vietnamese coffee producers and exporters, closely monitoring global market trends, diversifying export markets, and improving product quality will be essential for maintaining sustainable growth in the global coffee export industry.
