What are Specialty Lam Dong Coffee Beans?

Before we dive into the specifics of Lam Dong coffee beans, let’s first understand what specialty coffee beans are. Specialty coffee refers to the highest quality coffee beans carefully grown, harvested, and processed to preserve their unique flavors and attributes. These beans are typically sourced from specific regions known for their exceptional coffee production and are meticulously graded by certified coffee tasters.

The Origins of Lam Dong Coffee Beans

Lam Dong coffee beans hail from the picturesque highlands of Vietnam’s Lam Dong province, nestled amidst lush greenery and cool mountain air. This region’s unique climate, fertile volcanic soil, and altitude contribute to these coffee beans’ exceptional taste and aroma. The local farmers in Lam Dong have been cultivating coffee for generations, passing down their expertise and knowledge to preserve the legacy of this specialty brew.

Absolute advantage Specialty Lam Dong Coffee Beans joins the global value chain

Developing specialty coffee is an inevitable trend to join the global value chain in which Lam Dong has an absolute advantage. Therefore, based on ecological sub-regions and technical requirements, it is divided into coffee production and specialized areas to focus on techniques including:

The area with an altitude of 900 m-1,600 m above sea level has suitable conditions, soil, and climate, prioritizing the development of coffee and tea with an area of about 25,000 – 30,000 ha, accounting for about 15-17% of the area, coffee in the whole province. The area with an altitude of 800 m to 900 m above sea level has suitable conditions, soil, and climate, mainly for developing Robusta coffee with an area of about 130,000 – 140,000 ha, accounting for about 83-85% coffee area in the province. Identify several suitable ecological zones to develop high-class coffee varieties (Moka, Katura, Bourbon…) to produce super-quality specialty coffee and organic coffee in Da Lat City and Lac Duong district.
Besides the trademark “Di Linh Coffee,” which was certificated by the National Office of Intellectual Property on October 26, 2009, Lam Dong province was granted 3 exclusive trademarks for coffee and tea by the National Office of Intellectual Property. Arabica Langbiang Coffee”; “Coffee Cau Dat – Da Lat,” and Da Lat brand – Magical crystallization from good soil for Arabica coffee.
Thus, in terms of production zoning, building and developing the Lam Dong coffee brand has been carried out synchronously; The remaining problem is to reorganize production according to the model of the coffee value chain, focusing on quality, safety and sustainability and focusing on building a specialty coffee chain along with propaganda for producers. Coffee producers understand the concept of specialty coffee as a scientific basis to deploy large-scale production. From the results of research and production direction, we came up with the concept: “Specialty coffee is coffee produced from high-yielding, good quality coffee varieties; planted in places with specific climatic and soil conditions; organized production according to the sustainable agricultural cultivation process; quality criteria meet international standards” – (Pham S, 2017).
To develop 5 large-scale specialty coffee-growing regions in the districts: Di Linh 40,000 ha, Lam Ha 30,000 ha, Bao Lam 20,000 ha, Duc Trong 10,000 ha, Da Lat city, and Lac Duong District 4,000 ha to shape into large-scale raw material areas for processing and export. Developing coffee production areas certified according to UTZ, 4C standards, and Rainforest reaching 50-60% of the area to supply green coffee meeting export standards.
With a commodity with a significant raw material area, deep processing in the coffee industry is considered a guideline for the coffee industry to develop sustainably, creating added value commensurate with the size of the province and long-term vision; therefore, in the past time, Lam Dong province has always encouraged enterprises to invest in new deep processing facilities; at the same time, renew technology and equipment (classify and polish exported coffee) and increase the capacity of existing coffee processing facilities, to ensure the processing capacity of 90-95% of coffee output approved by the province and meet export standards. Deep processing brings the price higher than raw coffee from 80 to 100%; specialty coffees are deeply processed with an added value of up to 400 – 500%. This confirms that when deep processing, the added value is tremendous; if brand development is good,
In parallel with focusing on technical solutions for intensive farming and continuing to attract coffee processing projects, it is necessary to concentrate on post-harvest technology and use energy-saving systems in coffee drying. Continue to promote the geographical indication brands that have been built at home and abroad to encourage and expand export markets, especially specialty coffee, super quality coffee, and organic coffee; proactively integrate into the world; building Lam Dong coffee industry to develop sustainably in the context of climate change and international integration.
From there, several solutions are outlined to focus on production, scientific investment, and international cooperation… as follows:
Focus on directing certified coffee production: In international integration, participating in the global agricultural value chain, coffee must be produced with certification; food safety is an indispensable requirement. , to improve competitiveness. The area of coffee made according to certified quality standards across the province reached 76,000 hectares with an output of 310,000 tons, including UTZ Certified certification (UTZ merged with Rainforest Alliance in January 2018, the official name later is: UTZ Certified) “Rainforest Alliance”) with an area of 21,563 hectares, with an output of 86,894 tons; certified 4C, area 53,230 ha, output 215,717 tons; certified CAFE Practices, area 700 ha, output 1,700 tons. The area of certified coffee and tea trees is about 5,424 ha / 3,600 participating households, with an output of 12,353 tons.
Focused scientific and technological investment: Determined to be the main crop of the agricultural sector, in recent years, the province has invested quite comprehensively in scientific research works from the stage of selecting and creating high-yield varieties, good quality, determining a reasonable fertilizer formula; integrated pest control measures; sustainable farming techniques; support innovation in processing technology; at the same time, the province focuses on building and promoting coffee geographical indication brands at home and abroad.
Expanding comprehensive international cooperation: Expanding international cooperation to access scientific and technological achievements and financial resources to improve governance capacity. In the past time, Lam Dong province has cooperated with IDH Sustainable Trade Initiative to implement the Sustainable Landscape Program (ISLA) since 2015. It is the first province in Vietnam to implement this program.
Currently, Lam Dong is participating in the VnSAT project for the period 2016-2020 with a capital of about 129 billion VND to implement agricultural infrastructure items, improve management capacity, etc. 5 years to implement 55 sustainable replanting models; In the past 3 years, it has been implemented with a budget of 4.3 billion VND, supporting 31 sustainable coffee production models with an area of 27.5 ha; invest 15.5 billion VND to train farmers to produce sustainable coffee; support 7,
Based on promoting the results achieved in the past time, Lam Dong province continues to offer breakthrough solutions for the coffee industry until 2025 to integrate into the world and adapt to climate change actively. After, with synchronous solutions to develop the coffee industry in a comprehensive, sustainable, and modern way with a breakthrough in the new era, commensurate with potentials and advantages, continue to grow coffee in general and specialty coffee in particular, to adapt to climate change and actively integrate into the world. Thereby setting the task of conducting planning management and coffee development from 2021 to 2025 with the production scale in-depth to focus on improving productivity and quality.
Focus on closely directing the development of the spontaneous area, stabilizing the coffee area by 2025 at about 170,000 ha, of which about 18-20% of the coffee and tea area; increase the average yield of green coffee in the whole province by 2025 to about 3.6 tons/ha, the output is about 530,000 – 550,000 tons/year; continue to maintain Lam Dong as the province with the highest coffee productivity and output in Vietnam.
Improve the processing capacity of green coffee establishments and enterprises in the area by 2025 to reach 510,000 – 520,000 tons (accounting for 92-95% of the province’s coffee output), of which 70% of the output is processed. Processed on an industrial scale and 40% processed by wet processing technology.
On the other hand, determining science and technology is critical to increase added value for the coffee industry by improving the production capacity of high-quality coffee varieties for seed production facilities in the province. Sustainability not only for the 2013-2020 planning period but also for the long term; building a garden for producing coffee seedlings in the direction of high-tech application; completing the coffee propagation process, especially the seedlings, must be strictly tested for technique.
Invest in science and technology, and apply farming and seed technologies (grafting, replanting). Organization of agricultural production using high technology, smart agriculture, and organic agriculture. Strengthen planning management, and implement the planting of windbreaks and shade trees to create large-scale coffee gardens and high-quality field ecology.
Continue to do an excellent job of communicating the coffee industry: The authorities at all levels, professional agencies from the province to the grassroots, must propagandize and mobilize organizations, households, and individuals about the price. Value of coffee in participating in the global value chain, especially propaganda about the purpose, requirements, and necessity of implementing the program of replanting, improving coffee varieties, producing specialty coffee, organic coffee … and guidelines and policies of the State on support for investment loans to implement these programs. There are many ways to implement these programs, but the ultimate goal how to make farmers not rely on the coffee development program to increase income and improve the quality of life of each family. They are one of the essential contents to expand the scale of sustainable coffee production;
Finally, mechanisms, policies and market development: Branches of Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development in localities, based on practice, continue to have favorable policies in implementing the lending process and building specific guidelines on loan conditions for people to access capital, but the bank still actively manages to minimize the risk of money for the program.
At the same time, the State balances capital sources and urgent requirements and continues to invest in building transport and irrigation infrastructure in key coffee production areas of each locality. Continue to promote the geographical indication brands built at home and abroad, to promote and expand the coffee consumption market in the export market, especially specialty coffee, super quality coffee, and organic coffee; building Lam Dong coffee industry to develop sustainably in the context of climate change and international integration.
