The Borneo Coffee Event 2025 has officially concluded, marking ten days of intensive knowledge sharing, cultural exchange, and strategic discussions regarding the trajectory of the Southeast Asian coffee industry.
For Helena Coffee Vietnam, this event was not just a platform to share our expertise on AI-driven farming, but also an opportunity to witness a historic shift: The rise of Liberica as the crowning jewel of Sarawak’s agriculture.

Sarawak Liberica: The “Golden Child” of Borneo
A major highlight of the symposium was the official endorsement of Liberica as the premier representative of Sarawak’s coffee industry.
As reported by The Borneo Post, Mr. Wilson Entabang, Director of the Department of Agriculture (DoA) Sarawak, emphasized that Liberica is uniquely suited to the region’s topography. Unlike Arabica, which demands high altitudes, or Robusta, which requires specific dry spells, Liberica thrives in Sarawak’s lowlands and peat soils.
“Liberica is the most suitable species for our climate and soil conditions. It is resilient, historically significant, and holds the potential to be the global representative for Sarawak coffee.” — Department of Agriculture Sarawak.
This strategic focus aligns perfectly with the global coffee industry’s search for climate-resilient varieties. By focusing on what grows best in their soil rather than forcing foreign varieties, Sarawak is setting a sustainable example for the rest of the region.

The Competition: Validating the Quality of Liberica
The DoA’s confidence in Liberica was visibly validated during the Liberica Coffee Competition. The event showcased the species’ genetic and flavor diversity, breaking old stereotypes about its quality.
The competition highlighted a distinct contrast between Sarawak Liberica (Preliminaries) and West Malaysia’s House of Kendal Liberica (Finals).
-
Champion: The Sarawak Team took the championship title.
-
Significance: The victory of the local team, comprised of former Earthlings Coffee staff, proved that when processed with care and expertise, Sarawak Liberica can compete on the world stage.
-
Judges’ Verdict: A 20+ member international judging panel was impressed by the “sweetness, jackfruit notes, and heavy body” that define high-quality Liberica.

Helena Coffee Presentation: Technology Meets Tradition
While Sarawak focuses on the species (Liberica), Helena Coffee Vietnam brought the solution for methodology.
Mr. An Nguyen, Founder of Helena Coffee, delivered a keynote titled: “Innovations: From AI Coffee Farms to Global Coffee Trends in the World,” bridging the gap between traditional farming and modern technology.

The presentation outlined how data can elevate resilient species like Liberica and Robusta:
1. AI & Data-Driven Farming
Just as Sarawak has identified Liberica as its ideal crop, data analysis helps farmers maximize its potential. Helena Coffee introduced “Affordable Precision Agriculture,” using sensors to monitor soil moisture and plant health in real-time, ensuring consistency in yield.
2. Sustainable Production & EUDR Compliance
With the world moving toward stricter regulations, Mr. An Nguyen emphasized the necessity of traceability. Whether it is Robusta in Vietnam or Liberica in Borneo, the future belongs to coffee that can be traced from “farm to cup” with transparent data.
3. Global Market Trends
The presentation highlighted that the global market is ready for diversity. The rise of Specialty Robusta and Fine Liberica is driven by consumers seeking new experiences and sustainable alternatives to climate-threatened Arabica.

Coffee Farmer Education: Building the Foundation
Following the symposium, the event transitioned into a six-day Coffee Farmer Education Program. This initiative mirrors the sentiments of the DoA Sarawak: that the industry’s success relies on the growers.
Key focuses included:
-
Processing Modernization: Moving away from traditional methods to controlled fermentation to unlock better flavors.
-
Climate Resilience: Practical strategies for adapting to changing weather patterns.
-
Disease Control: Protecting the “heritage trees” of Borneo.
Conclusion: A United Front for Asian Coffee
The Borneo Coffee Event 2025 reaffirmed a powerful message: Southeast Asia is no longer just a producer; it is an innovator.
From the Sarawak Government’s strategic backing of Liberica to Vietnam’s push for AI-driven Robusta cultivation, the region is actively reshaping the global coffee map.
Helena Coffee Vietnam is proud to be part of this movement. We remain committed to connecting these innovations with global markets, ensuring that the stories of Asian farmers and their unique coffee trees are heard around the world.
