In Q1 of 2025, Vietnam’s coffee exports reached a record high, surpassing seafood to become the second-largest agricultural export by value, just behind timber. According to data from the General Department of Customs, Vietnam exported 509,500 tons of coffee in the first three months of the year, generating $2.88 billion in revenue—a 49.5% increase in value despite a 12.9% drop in volume year-over-year.
Coffee Prices Rebound After U.S. Delays Tariff Decision
Earlier in April, announcements regarding the U.S. potentially imposing high retaliatory tariffs—including on goods from Vietnam—caused panic in the coffee market. Domestic coffee prices in Vietnam’s Central Highlands plummeted from 132,000 VND/kg to 118,000 VND/kg. On the international market, export prices for Vietnamese Robusta and Arabica dropped sharply, losing $1,251/ton and $2,356/ton respectively from recent highs.
However, after the U.S. announced a 90-day postponement of the tariff implementation on April 10, coffee prices quickly bounced back both domestically and internationally.
In Đắk Lắk, Gia Lai, and Lâm Đồng, coffee prices recovered to 132,000 VND/kg.
On the London and New York exchanges, export prices have continued to rise and are now approaching pre-tariff-announcement levels.
Key Drivers Behind the Export Surge
The average export price of coffee in Q1/2025 reached $5,656/ton, up 71.7% from the same period last year. Notably, March alone saw Vietnam’s highest-ever monthly coffee export value at $1.16 billion. This price surge is largely due to reduced global supply and increased demand, especially from major European markets like Germany, Italy, and Japan.
Weakening USD – Investors Turn to Coffee
Experts note that the depreciation of the USD has been a major factor supporting coffee price increases. As investor confidence in the USD weakens, capital has shifted into commodities traded in dollars—coffee among them. In Vietnam, the exchange rate rising above 26,000 VND/USD has added further upward pressure on local prices.
