Cold Brew Or Cold Drip: Recently (and perhaps even later), cold brew coffee is increasingly occupying the top position in specialty coffee shops not only in Saigon but also spreading throughout provinces like Hanoi. , Da Nang, Hai Phong… Even in remote areas like… my kitchen has it too.
The article will delineate these two methods of making cold coffee.
What are their similarities and differences?
And our beloved customers, which way would you prefer?
Cold Brew: Methodology of increasing coffee in cold water
Almost ALL home brewing customers choose this method. It is a method of steeping coffee in cold water for 8-18 hours, with simple tools like a French Press or less than just a teapot with a filter bag.
A small note for you guys, making Cold Brew coffee by steeping method requires a moderate coarse grind size. The cold water will extract the solids, oils, acids, and some of the flavors characteristic of each coffee you like in a slow, leisurely manner.
Waiting time can range from 8-18 hours depending on several factors about temperature, roasting, and, your desires:
- If you let the steeped coffee brew in the fridge, the low temperature will require more waiting time to create a strong flavor and a pleasant balance.
- If you leave the soaking jar at room temperature, the time required will be significantly reduced
- If you’re steeping your coffee with a dark roast, you probably won’t want to steep it too long if you don’t want the coffee to be bitter. If the coffee is lightly roasted, you will probably reduce the steeping time if you don’t like too much acid.
Once you’ve had enough steeping time, you’ll need a filter to filter the grounds out of your Cold Brew. You can choose any filter. But it should be noted that not all filters give the same results.
If you use filter paper like Hario, the coffee will be filtered from the oil to become clean and pure. If you use a metal filter, you will save the oil secreted during the soaking process. This will directly affect the final taste you enjoy (in a different direction, no one is better).
Since it does not require special techniques, this method is used by many people who use ready-made French Press bottles to make. However, there are now many products born to serve this method of preparation that can reduce a few steps in the whole preparation process.
These include the Hario cold brew coffee bottle with a removable filter after the brewing process. You will not need to use a funnel to clean the coffee. Just enjoy it
Or some special products in the form of boring brewing, just flip one and the coffee will automatically flow through the filter as the Body Brew set.
This style of mixing will create a concentrated solution, which you can enjoy straight away if you like strong drinks. But usually, you should add more water to ensure a balanced cup of coffee. Or add anything you like to create a special drink (Best fresh milk, ice, beer, soda…)
In short, the highlight of this method is encapsulated in these few lines:
- Easy to make at home, with a variety of tools – even no tools at all
- Brewing time from 8-18 hours
- Take it easy and relax
- Coffee will be very strong
Cold Drip: Methods of washing cold coffee (ice, cold, cold, cold)
The drip method of cold coffee is usually more diverse in size than Cold Brew, it can range from small to extra-large. However, if you consider the ratio compared to Cold Brew, drip coffee will give a faster speed. It only takes you 3 to 5 hours for a 600ml pot of coffee.
Cold-brew drip coffee will have a smoother and milder flavor than the cold brew method.
Cold Drip requires little time because it works on the principle of water end extraction for coffee powder. Every drop of pure water flowing through the coffee powder is trying to extract the maximum resources of the coffee powder.
One drop just flowed, and another down and worked as hard as the previous drop. Soon, that drop of pure water took away most of the flavor that the coffee powder stored.
This is contrary to the soaking method, where the solution after soaking becomes more and more saturated compared to coffee powder. Therefore, the extraction speed is decreasing and inefficient, making the waiting time longer.
Just imagine how soapy is in washing clothes, these two methods can be applied. Method 1 is to use many small pots of water to wash many times until the last basin becomes clear because all the soap has been removed. The second way is to soak the whole shirt in a basin of clear water. Which way will be faster and CLEAN than you already know.
Although the Cold Drip method is so optimal, it is not easily accessible. Because it requires a few specialized dispensing tools, can control the drip rate, the system of tanks, filters, and containers …
If you like options, Cold Drip has a dozen options available to you. As majestic as the Yama Cold Drip tower or as large as the Hario Cold Drip, or as lovely as the Time More Cold Drip.
You can serve from 1 person to 2 dozen people depending on the size of the specialized equipment. These monumental items are not only visually aggressive but also great decor items for your cafe or bar.
The special features of the Cold Drip method of coffee making include:
- Mixing speed is only 3-5 hours
- Coffee will be smoother and lighter than cold brew brewed
- Visual compulsion – Just looking at it makes you want to drink
- Invest a little more expensive
Finally, what will you choose? Cold-brew or cold drip?
The choice is up to you because each mixing method has its advances and disadvantages. Either way, you have good coffee to drink.
